What is an Essential Oil?

If you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. Essential oils give plants their distinctive smells, essential oils protect plants and play a role in plant pollination. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and their beautiful fragrance, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices.

These therapeutic oils in plants protect the plant from insects, shield the plant from a harsh environment and help them adapt to their surroundings. By taking essential oils, you are harnessing the protective and healing powers of a plant.

Essential oils are composed of very small molecules that can penetrate your cells, and some compounds in essential oils can even cross the blood-brain barrier.

AROMATICALLY

Essential oils that can be used aromatically. Diffusion is one of the most popular ways to enjoy the aromatic benefits of essential oils.

Inhaling essential oil has the power to lift your mood and enhance your emotional state.

I love using my diffuser to get a beautiful aroma in every room of our home.

The diffuser is particularly good at protecting kids against environmental threats as the oil purifies the air and helps to ease breathing.

TOPICALLY

Essential oils that can be used topically, which means you can apply them directly on the skin or mix them with carrier oils or other personal care products.

One drop of essential oil can service every cell of your body and provide immediate comfort.

Apply a few drops to your feet, head, the back of your ears or neck, on your chest or any other troubled areas, and massage gently. When applied to the bottom of your feet it nourishes the blood stream within 30 seconds!

If you have sensitive skin you can dilute with fractionated coconut oil.

INTERNALLY

Essential oils that can be used internally. You can add oils to beverages, take them in doTERRA Veggie Caps, take doTERRA essential oils supplements, or use them in your favourite recipes.

Please ensure you are using Pure Essential Oils that are safe for internal use if considering this method.

  • They are safe for my whole family (by following simple dilution charts)
  • It makes me feel good knowing that I am contributing to a positive difference in the lives of farmers, harvesters, and distillers who contribute to dōTERRA’s oil production.

When you choose doTERRA, you are choosing essential oils gently and carefully distilled from plants that have been patiently harvested at the perfect moment by experienced growers from around the world for ideal extract composition and efficacy.

Each doTERRA essential oil is also carefully and thoroughly tested using the strict CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® quality protocol. Experienced essential oil users will immediately recognise the superior quality standard for naturally safe, purely effective therapeutic-grade doTERRA essential oils.

The most common method of extracting essential oils is a low-heat steam distillation process. In this process, pressurised steam is circulated through plant material. The essential oils are liberated from the plant and carried away by the steam. When the steam cools, the water and oils naturally separate and the oil is collected. To ensure the highest quality oil extract with the correct chemical composition, the temperature and pressure must be closely monitored. Too little heat or pressure and the oil will not release; too much, and the oil’s composition and potency will be affected.

With an ever-expanding product line that includes over 100 different essential oils sourced from over 40 nations, doTERRA truly offers the gifts of the Earth

While the temptation for a company as large as doTERRA may be to buy large plots of land and mass produce oils, doTERRA places great value on the expert knowledge of local farmers—many of whom have nurtured essential oil plants for generations. doTERRA recruits their expertise into a Global Botanical Network and, in so doing, responsibly supports thousands of jobs around the world.

Co-Impact Sourcing™ by doTERRA helps health-conscious individuals find safe alternatives while also lifting entire communities and giving them a hope for the future. As part doTERRA's promise to provide pure, potent, consistent essential oils, Co-Impact Sourcing ensures that the doTERRA CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® process starts at the source.

Distillers

While there is a science to the distillation of essential oils, it is also an art. Distillers not only rely on years of experience, they also employ modern technologies and techniques.

dōTERRA partners with expert distillers who exert custom pressures and temperatures to extract the purest, most potent and beneficial essential oils.

Scientists

Unlike others in the essential oils industry, doTERRA is built on firm science. doTERRA employs more than 30 scientists and boasts 2,200 square feet in cutting-edge laboratory space. doTERRA’s committed scientists continue to push the boundaries in essential oil testing .

doTERRA's state-of-the-art lab uses the most advanced testing methods to verify the purity and potency of its essential oils.

After the aromatic compounds are distilled from the plant material, each batch is scrupulously tested to ensure that it meets CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® standards.

doTERRA developed this rigorous criteria to certify that its oils contain no added fillers, synthetic ingredients, or harmful contaminants. Utilising its own facilities, as well as trusted third-party labs, doTERRA essential oils undergo the CPTG process to ensure that customers receive the highest quality oil, every time.

Each batch of essential oils goes through a battery of rigorous and definitive tests. Each step ensures that only the highest quality essential oils pass through quality control, quality assurance, and on to you and your family.

Even with pure essential oils the composition of the oil can vary depending on the time of day, season, geographic location, method and duration of distillation, year grown, and the weather, making every step of the production process a critical determinant of the overall quality of the essential oil product.
